Going Out on Your Own
Pat McKeough is not afraid to take a risk.
In 1995, at age 47, Pat McKeough quit his position as a well-known investment publishing editor to launch a solo business venture. He began researching, writing and publishing the Successful Investor, the first of four newsletters that established his company, The Successful Investor Inc., as one of the top-rated investment publishers in North America.
“I started to see, with Peter’s help, and by talking to the other members, how I could manage better, delegate more, and devote my time to things I do best. I could get lots done via my employees, as opposed to doing it myself.”

Four years after launching his first newsletter, Pat received regulatory approval to offer portfolio management services to the public. He immediately applied his newfound credentials to his company, to create a unique business combining portfolio management services and published investment advice.
“I had a ready crowd of portfolio management prospects among subscribers who had been reading my newsletters for years,” McKeough explains.
By 2004, The Successful Investor’s subscription growth was surging. However, with success came new challenges. The complexities of the publishing side of the company had begun to eat up a lot of Pat’s time, which made it hard to respond to queries from potential portfolio management clients. That’s when Pat recognized that he needed business management guidance to avoid having to continually ‘re-invent the wheel’ in his office. That’s when he found TEC Canada.
“I looked around at different operators of peer advisory groups and TEC was the one I thought was most professional. In fact, it was an easy choice.”
Impressed with TEC’s approach, Pat was also pleased with his own group and its TEC Chair, Peter Buchanan.
“I started to see, with Peter’s help and by talking to the other members, how I could manage better, delegate more, and devote my time to things I do best. I could get lots done via my employees, as opposed to doing it myself.”
Today, business is booming for Pat. With 16 employees, he manages investments for over 450 Canadian families, while publishing the company’s four top North American investment newsletters: The Successful Investor, Stock Pickers Digest, Wall Street Stock Forecaster and the Canadian Wealth Advisor. He also offers a fifth service, Pat McKeough’s Inner Circle, that gives its members the opportunity to pose investment questions directly to Pat and his staff of investment analysts.
Quite often, Pat is asked to pick stocks or comment on investments by major Canadian publications. His financial wisdom has also received accolades from CBS MarketWatch, The Hulbert Financial Digest and The Wall Street Journal.
Pat is the author of a 1993 Canadian best-seller, Riding the Bull: How you can Profit from the 1990s Stock Market Boom. In 1996, in the midst of an upsurge of Quebec separatist sentiment, Pat co-wrote Surviving Canada’s Separation Anxiety: How to Ensure your Financial Future.
